After leaving Broome we headed south with two destinations in mind – Barn Hill Station stay and Eighty Mile Beach. Both being two very different experiences. Barn Hill is a bush camp/caravan park that’s pretty basic but sits atop a ridge overlooking the ocean and has some pretty interesting rock formations and lovely beaches and swimming spots. We opted for a site with no shade but it was right on the ridge so we had ocean views and I could sit in my comfy chair with my binoculars and scour for whales whenever I wanted! Plus of course, prime sunset viewing! We enjoyed the swimming here and did try to catch our dinner but to no avail.
After Barn Hill we went into Eighty Mile Beach or Grey Nomad central!! These guys come for 3 months and have a lovely ole social time. This amazing spot has a caravan park right on the beach (80 miles presumably!!) and although it’s really shallow they catch blue salmon, threadfin salmon and sharks off the beach. Having said that, on the day we arrived there was people fishing either way up the beach as far as the eye could see and only a handful at the fish cleaning bay in the arvo so I think it’s more like a fish lottery!! The sharks also make the beach supposedly unswimmable which just seems a shame but I wasn’t going to test the theory!! We did although try our hand at the fish lottery and drove up the beach and fished but with no luck.
