GORGEOUS GORGES

Excuse the play on words, couldn’t resist!!
So one of the many attractions of the Gibb River Road is its’ many gorges. There are lots all along the length of the road and one of the amazing things about them is that although it’s the dry season they all have plenty of water and most even still have water flowing over waterfalls and down river. The land as you would imagine throughout the Kimberley is dry, very dry and dusty and hot but all the gorges have lush vegetation and trees with green leaves and are just so refreshing and cold to swim in and so it’s quite bizarre. I’m still not sure of my favourite, they are all different but in general all require a decent effort to get to. There’s usually a good walk for sometimes up to an hour and lots and lots of climbing on rocks and boulders. I have improved my mountain goat skills considerably and thank goodness did not do any ankle sprains or worse!
I also have hardened the fuck up and learnt to appreciate the sweet reward of jumping in and swimming in each gorge even though some (most!) are so COLD, i.e. freezing!!!
One of the most impressive gorges for colours in the rock formations and just outright size is Windjana Gorge and this is one that you have to appreciate from the sidelines because of the local freshwater crocs that inhabit – about 70 apparently.
We did not go into every gorge, it’s impossible to see them all but we feel that we saw enough to appreciate the beauty of this amazing region.
Plus, you never know, we might be back up here another time and then we’ll have some to visit.
Unfortunately I think that the true remote beauty of “The Gibb” is slowly diminishing as more and more people visit and it gets busier and busier. We were amazed by the amount of caravans (and I mean big 21 footers plus or normal pop top vans, i.e. Jayco Shayko’s – not off road) that were on this road. I swear that one day one person brought a caravan along the gibb and now everybody thinks it’s ok! It’s not, it is still not recommended and nor should it be. Some of these people carry everything with them, it’s like a luxury resort on wheels (generators, satellite dishes), seriously . . .. not camping!!! End of rant!!!
