ROAMING AROUND IN THE REMOTENESS!! 7000KMS AND COUNTING

We took a detour off the Gibb to go to Drysdale River Station so that we could leave the camper there while we went up to Mitchell Falls – we have a two man tent. We were fairly confident that the road would not be suitable to tow and what a good decision that turned out to be. If only everybody would do the same!
The road to the turn off is fine but the road into the falls campground is not maintained and from the Kalumburu Road it’s in very bad shape, really really bad!!
It took us about 3 hours to go 80kms. I’m sure that day will fade in our memories one day! Its realistically a 4 day effort to get to Mitchell falls, 60 kms off the gibb to Drysdale, 104 kms to kalumburu road, and then 80kms of nightmare corrugations to the campground.( The corrugations wer e so big that when we had to slow down because we came up to a person towing, we couldn’t then speed up again.) Then a full days walk and then return the next day.
The walk into the falls is about 8.6kms return and we had a 35 degree day so weren’t we lucky! We had a refreshing reward swim at the top of the falls and it was lovely. The falls themselves are impressive and are amazing considering how remote they are yet still accessible – although not easily!
Are they worth the effort, we’re not sure? Maybe more worthwhile earlier in the season closer to the wet. Maybe easier and cheaper to take a scenic flight from Drysdale!!! Definitely cheaper for those who damaged shockies, suspension and tyres and had to be flat trucked outta there and back to Drysdale, and there was quite a few on the day we went in. But having said all that, it’s part of the adventures and the positive is that we sustained no damage and now have full confidence with the DMax’s ability to handle that sort of challenge!!
